Restorative Justice is an "ancient idea whose time has come." This presentation will provide an overview of the global movement in restorative practices, ranging from Rwanda's Gacaca Courts, which helped reintegrate men who participated in the genocide back into their villages, to Canada's Circles of Support and Accountability, who work with high risk sex offenders recently released from prison, to Australia's Restorative Conferences that use police to facilitate victim-offender dialogues prior to adjudication. We will explore the philosophy of restorative justice and its application to a variety of criminal offenses. We will also look at findings that support its effectiveness in both reducing recidivism and meeting victim and community needs.
