Mardi Crawford has tried to "defend justice for the poor" throughout her career. As a staff attorney at Michigan's State Appellate Defender Office (1979-1987), she represented individual clients unable to afford a lawyer for their appeals following conviction.
She then turned to more systemic work, first at the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (1987-1990, plus consulting work thereafter), and then at the New York Defenders Association (1996-present). Studying and evaluating public defense systems, drafting standards for public defense services, and consulting with lawyers and others, she seeks to improve representation across New York State. Involvement in a variety of coalitions and collaborations intended to ensure justice for all brings her in contact with many people striving against high odds to end rampant injustice. Working alongside friends from a variety of backgrounds and motivations, including people who have been incarcerated, gives her reason and energy to continue.
